IENE workshops

IENE arranges scientific or technical workshops, before 2008 called IENE Open Day, on the initiative of the respective host country or organisation. Such workshops give the opportunity for national experts, stakeholders and the public to meet with IENE international experts and discuss specific problems or projects.

TransGreen workshop 2018 in Hungary

The meeting will take place in Budapest, Hungary, on May 16-17, 2018. The title of the event is “Sustainable transportation in the Carpathian Convention frame“. The workshop will take place on the first day, and the Carpathian Convention Working Group on the second day. The event is organized by the Department of Environmental and Natura Protection of Hungarian Biological Society, Budapest Zoo & Botanical Garden, MTA Centre for Ecological Research, Varangy Akciócsoport Egyesület, CEEweb, the Secretariat of the Carpathian Convention and IENE.

Amphibian workshop 2017 in Sweden

A national IENE workshop was held in Stockholm, Sweden, on November 29, 2017. The title of the event was “Amphibians and infrastructure”. The program included both research and practical examples, following up effectiveness etc. The workshop had around 50 participants.

Scientific workshop 2016 in Hungary

The meeting took place at Budapest Zoo & Botanical Garden, Hungary, on May 4, 2016. It was the 6th event about transport infrastructure and its effects on wildlife that has been organized by the Hungarian Toad Action Group Association. The workshop was supported by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA Centre for Ecological Research) and Budapest Zoo and organised in cooperation with IENE.

In addition to the professional interest in organising this event, it was also aimed to honor the memory of Dr. Miklós Puky who established the Toad Action Group in 1986 and later became President of the Toad Action Group Association (1996-2015) and was the main organizer of the previous five meetings.

The workshop included presentations related to linear infrastructure, environment impact assessments, mitigation measures and monitoring in Europe. On behalf of IENE a short history of the 20 years of activities was presented, as well as the implementation of the Dawei road project in Myanmar and Thailand (one of the last projects that Miklos participated in as basic contributor).

Technical workshop 2013:c in Spain

The meeting took place at San Francisco Cultural Centre in Cáceres, Spain, on November 13-14, 2013.

About 100 persons from 6 European countries, with jobs involved in environment and infrastructures, participated at the meeting. It was organised by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment and the Regional Government of Extremadura, and with the collaboration of IENE.

The meeting was the 5th of the Spanish Working Group on Habitat Fragmentation due to Transportation Infrastructures, created in 1999 in the frame of the COST 341 Action.

Scientific workshop 2013:b in Czech Republic

The workshop took place at Hotel Fontana in Luhacovice, Czech Republic, on October 16-18, 2013.

It was arranged in collaboration with Transport Research Centre, Czech Republic (TRC CR), Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic (NCA CR) and State Nature Protection of Slovakia and the title of the workshop was “Transportation Infrastructure and Wildlife Corridors – learning from experience“.

Scientific & technical workshop 2013:a in Romania

The workshop took place in Lugoj, Romania, the 23rd to the 25th of May 2013.

It was hosted by the “Vasile Goldis” University of Arad and co-organised by WWF-DCP, Fauna & Flora International and Zarand Association. The theme of the meeting was “Effective motorway planning and securing conservation interests during the planning, construction and operational phases of development”.

Scientific workshop 2011 in Greece

The IENE 2011 Scientific Workshop took place in Nymfeo and Kastoria, Greece, on the 21st to the 24th of September 2011.

It was hosted by ARCTUROS and the University of Western Macedonia. The theme of the meeting was “Highways and wildlife: How do they co-exist?

Open Day 2009 in Évora, Portugal

An IENE Open Day was organised at the University of Évora on the 24th of April 2009.

The main theme was “Transport infrastructure of the 21st century: connecting people and wildlife”. 201 persons from 18 countries attended the Open Day. Participants included people from road and railway administrations, people from environmental administrations and NGOs, researchers from universities, technicians from Environmental Impact Assessment firms and students.

Workshop 2008 in Nyíregyháza, Hungary

The 9th to the 12th of April 2008, representatives from 18 European countries met in the Hungarian city Nyíregyháza to discuss the needs and possibilities to re-activate IENE.

It was the unanimously conclusion of the participants that there was a need for a new and more active IENE at European level, especially with respect to the ongoing expansion of transport infrastructure in Eastern-European countries and the threat of a climate change. An interim steering committee was formed to establish a new IENE secretariat, update statutes and website and ensure future funding.

Workshops before 2008

IENE workshops were previously called Open days and was held in combination with internal IENE meetings. The Open Days are described together with IENE meetings before 2008.
