New publication: 3rd edition of technical guidance on wildlife crossings and biodiversity in transport infrastructure
The third edition of the technical guide on the design of wildlife crossings, perimeter fencing, and complementary measures to enhance biodiversity in transport infrastructure is now available.
Developed במסגרת the Working Group on Habitat Fragmentation caused by Transport Infrastructure and promoted by MITECO, this updated guidance reflects the collective expertise of professionals in biodiversity conservation, transport engineering, and environmental impact assessment.
This new edition builds upon previous versions by integrating the latest scientific knowledge and practical experience. In particular, it draws on the recent IENE Infrastructure and Biodiversity: A Handbook for Action, as well as an extensive review of the literature and contributions from infrastructure and biodiversity managers.
Among the key updates:
- Expanded content on habitat defragmentation, supporting ecological restoration efforts
- New guidance on adapting existing infrastructure to improve wildlife permeability
- Updated factsheets covering 11 types of wildlife crossings and revised recommendations on perimeter fencing
- Inclusion of emerging technologies aimed at reducing wildlife-vehicle collisions
- New factsheets on the management of habitats associated with transport infrastructure
Importantly, the guide also identifies ineffective measures and highlights practices that should be avoided, while pointing out solutions that require further research or should only be applied in specific contexts.
This publication is the result of a long-standing collaborative effort, with technical support from MINUARTIA. Over more than two decades, this collaboration has contributed to the implementation of thousands of wildlife crossings and mitigation measures, helping to reduce wildlife mortality and improve road safety.
By consolidating current knowledge and experience, this updated guidance represents an important step forward in improving the design and effectiveness of biodiversity-friendly transport infrastructure.
