Thirty years ago, a small group of visionaries came together around a simple conviction: roads and railways did not have to become walls for wildlife. To mark three decades of the Infrastructure & Ecology Network Europe, IENE has published Harmonizing Transportation and Nature, a book retracing the history, people and achievements of the network.
The publication was presented and celebrated at the gala dinner of the IENE 2026 International Conference in Bristol in September. It is now available to read online below.
Inside the book
- A foreword by IENE President Johan Rydlöv, and reflections from founding figures Hans Bekker and Anders Sjölund
- The evolution of IENE, from the 1995 Infra Eco Declaration to the 30th anniversary in Bristol
- 30 Years, 30 Voices: members and partners from more than twenty countries share what the network has meant to them
- Case studies from the Netherlands, Greece, Romania and Bulgaria, where IENE knowledge and people have played a role
- The road ahead, guided by the IENE Action Plan 2025–2030
- A tribute to Miklós Puky (1961–2015), who helped restart the network in 2008
The book is illustrated with photographs by artist Marina Caneve, whose work explores the relationship between photography, research and landscapes.
