IENE Celebrates 30 Years of Connecting Biodiversity and Infrastructure

In 2026, the Infrastructure and Ecology Network Europe (IENE) proudly celebrates 30 years of activity, marking three decades of collaboration, knowledge exchange, and progress at the intersection of biodiversity and transport infrastructure.

Since its creation in 1996, IENE has grown into a leading European network, bringing together researchers, practitioners, public authorities, and organisations committed to reducing the ecological impacts of transport systems and promoting sustainable solutions.

Over the past 30 years, IENE has played a key role in:

  • Advancing scientific knowledge and practical solutions
  • Supporting the integration of biodiversity into transport planning and policy
  • Facilitating collaboration across disciplines and countries
  • Developing tools, guidance and shared resources for practitioners

From its early conferences to its current activities — including working groups, the IENE Handbook, and contributions to European research projects — the network has continuously evolved to address emerging challenges such as habitat fragmentation, climate change, and ecological connectivity.

A Year of Celebration and Reflection

This anniversary year offers an opportunity to reflect on IENE’s achievements and the evolution of the field over the past three decades. It also highlights the importance of continued collaboration between science, policy and practice to address current and future challenges.

Looking Ahead: The Future of IENE

While celebrating its legacy, IENE is also looking forward. The network remains committed to strengthening its role in supporting science, policy and practice, and to contributing to key European priorities such as nature restoration, climate resilience and sustainable infrastructure development.

A major highlight of the year will be the IENE 2026 Conference, taking place in Bristol (UK) from 20 to 25 September 2026, which will serve as the central moment of the anniversary celebrations. The conference will bring together the IENE community and partners to exchange knowledge, explore innovations, and shape the future of infrastructure ecology.

Join the Celebration

As IENE marks this important milestone, members and partners are invited to engage with the anniversary activities and contribute to the ongoing development of the network.

Together, we continue to build on 30 years of collaboration — and to shape the next decades of biodiversity-friendly infrastructure in Europe and beyond.
