COST 341: Habitat Fragmentation due to lineair Transportation infrastructure
The IENE organization was the applicant of the COST 341-project 'Habitat Fragmentation due to lineair Transportation infrastructure'
Cost (Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research) is a European network for the coordination of national subsidized research striving for an exchange of information on international scale.
The main objective of this project was to promote a safe and sustainable pan-European transport infrastructure through recommending measures and planning procedures with the aim of conserving biodiversity and reducing vehicular accidents and resulting fauna casualties.
The Cost 341 action started in 1998 and runs over 4,5 years (the action has been extended till Sept. 2003). Sixteen countries and one NGO were participating (Austria, Belgium,Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Hungary, Ireland, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and one NGO (the European Centre for Nature Conservation, ECNC)).
The intention was to work on a European level around 3 specific points:
- Make a detailed inventory of the current state of the art as regards habitat fragmentation caused by the transport network in Europe. The information of every partcipating country is integrated in a 'European Review'
- The best practice regarding methodologies, indicators, technical design and procedures for avoidance, mitigation and compensation of adverse effects on nature is gathered in a 'European Handbook' of best practice.
- Set up an 'Online Database' with a survey of European Institutions and experts on the matter, publications, technical terminology,...
The deliverables of COST 341 are for different users :
- the technical and scientific community
- European Community/government /policymakers
- advisory/construction companies
- non-governmental organisations
- the public.
The Action should bring via its deliverables the following benefits:
- Reduction in the stress produced by linear transportation infrastructure on the European biological heritage via implementation of a scientifically based, uniform set of measures.
- Saving of time and money by learning from past mistakes and avoiding overlapping research.
- Enhancement of road safety.
- Enlarged and diversified manufacture of related products (ecoducts, tunnels, fences), and consequently more employment.
- European integration in the field of planning procedures and technical requirements for implementation of mitigation and compensation measures.
- Provision of scientific and technical support to the implementation of the trans-European Transport Networks (TEN-T).
