Objectives
The overall goal of IENE is to work for an environmentally sustainable transport infrastructure in Europe and elsewhere.
Goals and Strategies
Infra Eco Network Europe (IENE), established in 1996, is a European network of authorities, institutes and experts involved in the phenomena of habitat fragmentation caused by the construction and use of linear transport infrastructure, especially roads, railways and canals (waterways). It addresses decision makers, planners and researchers as well as the public, by providing an international and interdisciplinary arena to encourage and enable cross-boundary cooperation in research, mitigation and planning.
The organization stimulates mutual cooperation among its members and support the exchange of knowledge between the sectors of environment and transport infrastructure; both on a national and on an international level. IENE combines and disseminates international research results, practical knowledge and experiences in order to advance beneficiary environmental effects and reduce detrimental impacts caused by the construction, use and maintenance of linear transportation infrastructure.
The general goal of IENE is to promote a safe and sustainable pan-European transport infrastructure through recommending measures and planning procedures to conserve biodiversity, counteract landscape fragmentation, and reduce vehicular accidents and wildlife casualties.
More specific objectives of the IENE network are:
• developing methods to prioritize where and when mitigation measures are needed;
• harmonising mitigating and compensating measures at European level;
• supporting national initiatives concerning environment & transport;
• promoting international and multidisciplinary cooperation in research and monitoring activities;
• highlighting gaps in knowledge and providing input to upcoming national and international research frameworks;
• sensitizing a broader audience, support education around the problem of habitat fragmentation due to transport infrastructure.
